Akademi - Current Projects in Conjuction With London Councils
In November 2008 Akademi South Asian Dance UK embarked on a new London Councils programme to provide unique and innovative dance and related arts projects across 18 London boroughs over the next 3 years. Our work focuses on two specific target groups:
CREATING MOVES
Delivering South Asian dance workshops for disadvantaged children and young people (between 5 and 18 years) at risk of exclusion.
Workshops are culturally diverse, artistically excellent and foster positive attitudes amongst participants through both experiencing a professional performance and participating in creative activities.
Projects focus on classical South Asian dance or popular Bollywood dance and related art forms such as music, drama and visual arts. We have vast experience of designing bespoke sessions that can be tailor-made in accordance with the national curriculum or even feed in to a local event, mela or festival.
With the summer fast approaching, look out for our professional performances and community workshops at a London event near you!
INTER ACTION
Providing accessible and relevant workshops for older people across London. Content for the projects draw upon the rich resources of South Asian dance and movement including: Classical, contemporary, folk and popular styles, martial arts and yoga, as well as music from South Asian traditions. There is a particular focus on active health for both frail and active older people.
A session of movement (chair-based or standing) will work on core stability, balance, posture, flexibility and strength as well as breathing and relaxation techniques and massage.
Akademi has an accomplished history of working with older people and in particular BAMER groups of older people. Workshops will be equally promoted and delivered to disadvantaged groups and artists will work in community languages where required.
