As one of the few Indian classical dance performances of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2010, Duality explores the deity seldom presented in Indian art forms – the deity that is half man, half woman. Duality uses the dichotomous art form of Bharatanatyam to portray this opposing-natured deity. Those that have lent their talents to enhance this production have been leading musicians from the field of Indian music and a dynamic individual from the field of art.
Duality is the exploration of Ardhanarishwara – the union of the fiery-tempered Lord Shiva and the gracious Goddess Parvati. The production journeys from considering the opposing psyches of these two characters, to culminating in the amalgamation of them both. The use of projected imagery and rarely heard scored music further aids the audience’s understanding and experience.
Duality showcases the debut choreography of Sulochana K. Sarma, whose performing career has taken her both around India and the UK. Along the way she has been conferred several titles including “Natya Kala Ratna” by the Natyanjali Trust in Chennai, India and “Nritya Shivali” by the Shivali Cultural Society in Mumbai, India. Sulochana has also been recognised as being, “Aaj Ke Kalakar,” – Today’s Talent by Nritya Bharati in Ahmedabad, India. The unique nature of Duality will be sure to take the audience on a paradoxical journey that will be enlightening and captivating for artists and art lovers alike.
Duality will be running at Spotlites @ The Merchants’ Hall, details as included in this listing.
